A Singing Session, and a Church in the City

On Sunday 29 November, from 12:30 to 2:00 pm, St Andrew’s City Church holds a karaoke session at the Level 1 Welcome Centre under the theme “Relive the 50s–90s Classics”. The venue is 1 Tavistock Ave; registration is open.

St Andrew’s City Church is an Anglican parish under the Diocese of Singapore, established in 2010 and located at 1 Tavistock Avenue. It serves English- and Mandarin-speaking congregations; the Mandarin service is at 10 am every Sunday, alongside children’s and adult Sunday school, small groups and a prayer meeting. Anglicanism is one strand of Protestant Christianity, and the Diocese of Singapore covers many parishes.

It describes itself this way: city life is busy and pressured, and the church wants to be a place of rest, refreshment and recharge — like coming home and sinking into a comfortable chair. In a space that defines itself by rest, a singing session does not feel out of place.

The songs of the 1950s through the 1990s are shared memory across several generations. The melodies were simple and the words direct, singing of parting, reunion and the things one could not say aloud when young. A karaoke session is about the songs, but it gathers people. When the young sing their parents’ songs, the older ones hear their own youth.

The poster does not state any fee or registration method; please check details with the church: 6336 7098, admin@sactc.org.sg, 1 Tavistock Avenue, Singapore 555104.
