AI Agents and Older Learners

An elder’s questions were not about what AI is, but whether he can learn it and what it does for the church.

Two men at a food court table with two cups of coffee

Two coffees in a food court, and Elder Lee did not ask what AI is. He asked three practical things: what the course teaches, whether a man his age can learn it, and whether it helps share the gospel.

The course does not start with programming; it starts with talking to your phone. Hand it a messy stack of notes and ask for a table. Give it a meeting record and ask for an announcement. Further on: build a simple website, set up a service that answers automatically, turn the weekly repetitive work into a routine. Plain language throughout, no code, a phone is enough.

For older learners the uses are concrete. Photographs and stories of grandchildren become a small booklet. The church directory, visitation notes and prayer list stop living in three notebooks. An English document can be photographed and translated. A formal letter is drafted first, corrected after. Not high technology — an afternoon's work turned into twenty minutes.

For evangelism the gain is saying things clearly, in language different people understand. A testimony becomes an article, then an English or Indonesian version. Invitation cards, meeting notices and answers to seekers' common questions can all be drafted first. Most churches have one or two writers; drafts give them their time back for visitation and prayer.

The boundaries matter. AI does not understand people; visiting and comforting cannot be outsourced. What it writes must be checked, especially scripture references and numbers. Members' data is private and does not belong in a public chat tool.

What Elder Lee really asked was whether he would be left behind. That is the point of the course: to let those willing to learn keep up.

The AI Agent course runs in small classes, starting from phone basics and covering organising information, writing content, website and reply automation, and everyday workflow, with a certificate on completion. For dates, fees and NTUC member subsidies, WhatsApp +65 8134 8593.
